Rye Lawn Tennis Club Quiz 2026

Saturday 11th April saw many of Rye’s finest minds gather together in the clubhouse to pit their wits against the devilish questions of the Club’s new quizmaster, Phil “the Riddler” Harper. Ten teams squeezed in, so the intellectual heft was considerable. The quizmaster’s triumphant entrance, resplendent in green and topped with a bowler hat, to rousing applause was quickly followed by groans as the opening geography round threw out killer questions such as “What was the most recent new country to be recognised by the UN?” (South Sudan in case you’re wondering.)

Fuelled on salty snacks, beer and wine (perhaps not the best nourishment for the neurons, but anyway …), the quizzers navigated rounds on music, celebrity voices, literature, popular culture and sport. Triumphant high-fives and fist pumps from younger members of the Jempson clan were seen, where their knowledge of Taylor Swift and Charlie XCX filled the voids left by their baffled elders. However, on the opera question all eyes turned to Jempo – sadly, the Riddler had found a chink in his armour and it was head-in-hands for Jempo on that one when the answers were read out.

After some frantic calculations by the Riddler’s assistant, it became apparent that a tie-break was called for, Backseat Drivers captained by Claire Myatt and Mix and Match captained by Kate Bearcroft being neck-and-neck. The Backseat Drivers guessed closest to the height of the Eiffel Tower in meters to secure victory.
