The Junior Tennis Tournament, organised by Amanda Hoffman and her team, took place from Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th August and was a packed-out event, with some 300 entrants enjoying non-stop sunshine on the beautiful Rye Lawn Tennis Club’s grass courts. There was a strong local presence among the entries, as well as visitors from Andover, Newcastle, Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone, Sevenoaks and London.
On the first day, in the boys’ singles, fifteen-year-old Luke Pakenham, who plays at Westway, London, came through to win against Harry Whitfield, a member of the Northumberland Club who has travelled down to watch or play in the tournament every year since he was born!
In the girls’ singles, sixteen-year-old Lucy Jamieson, who trains at Wye Tennis Club, was triumphant in a strong field.
The following day, the boys’ doubles title was lifted by Harry Frisby and Arthur Bentley, who both play for their respective schools Millfield and Radley College, in a tight match against Levi Routhledge and Isaac Hilton, who also play for their school, Bede’s. Levi also trains at Le Tennis, Maresfield Lawn Tennis Club and Isaac at The Weald Tennis Club, Hassocks.
In the girls’ doubles, Immy Robinson and Freya Mocke, from Maidstone Tennis Club, reached the finals to narrowly defeat the older pairing of Lucy Jamieson from Wye and Sophie Corbett, who plays at Bethersden Tennis Club.
On Thursday evening, in glorious sunshine, the club organised a BBQ and music for all the players and their families.
The mixed doubles on Friday saw two sets of siblings battle it out for the trophy, with Josh and Immy Robinson from Maidstone Tennis Academy and Wye Tennis Club coming out triumphant again Carl and Freya Mocke, who also train at Maidstone Tennis Academy and play for Maidstone Lawn Tennis Club. Immy and Freya were playing in their second finals of the tournament.
